2A Girls Basketball: Lions Maul Bearcats in Regionals

MOUNT VERNON — W.F. West was hopeful for an upset against No. 1 Lynden here on Saturday, but the Lions roared ahead to a 13-0 lead and never looked back, defeating the Bearcats 66-45 in a State 2A Regional girls basketball game.

The loss means W.F. West will play against Burlington-Edison on Wednesday at 9 p.m. in the Yakima SunDome in a loser out contest. The Tigers won 53-42 over Renton on Saturday in Everett.

Maggie Vadala had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Annika Waring scored eight points and Kyla McCallum added five points.

Four Lions were in double figures with Livia Tjoelker and Keylie Hershey scoring 13 points each. Blakely Doerge chipped in 12 points and Anna VanderYacht added 10 points.

Lynden shot 55 percent from the field while W.F. West shot just 27 percent, although W.F. West won the rebounding battle by a 37-35 margin.

After falling behind 13-0, the Bearcats got on the board and trailed 22-14 after one quarter. The Lions held W.F. West to four points in the second quarter to lead 32-18 at halftime.

It was more of the same in the second half as Lynden outscored W.F. West 34-25 to earn their spot in the double-elimination state tournament bracket.

The Bearcats only common opponent with Burlington-Edison is Lynden, with the Tigers falling twice to the Lions, the most recent a 43-40 loss in the district semifinals on Feb. 15.
