CHEHALIS — Two days after a five-point second half against Mossyrock sent Toledo careening into the losers bracket the squad from south Lewis County flipped in convincing fashion. Playing at W.F. West in a loser-out affair on Monday Toledo held Toutle Lake scoreless over the first 12:48 on their way to a 63-26 victory.

Toledo used a full court press and stifling man-to-man defense from the jump in order to take all the fight out of the Ducks from the get-go. By the end of the first quarter Toledo held a 20-0 edge and looked like a team playing with something to prove following their upset loss to the Vikings on Saturday.

“We used it as motivation. We had a good practice yesterday. I don’t know what happened on Saturday but give credit to Mossyrock,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “It was kind of a wake up call for us and the girls responded really well. I’m really proud of them.”

Stacie Spahr paced Toledo with a 12-point and 19-rebound double-double while fending off any Ducks who were brave enough to waddle into the paint.

“She can own the paint and she’s a beast when she wants to. She’s a really good player. She’s put in a lot of time over the summer and she’s improved a ton,” added Layton. “When she’s confident, like I think she is, she’s hard to stop.”

Toledo took a 30-7 lead into the intermission thanks to a pair of free throws after the buzzer by Grace Tauscher. The 5-foot-6 junior finished the game with eight points. Kal Scaplow scored a game-high 16 points in the win and snagged four rebounds.

“We really wanted to pressure them and make them work the entire court,” noted Layton.

Toledo continued to add on in the second half even as the end of their bench found their way onto the court.

Gracie Madill scored a dozen points and snatched four steals for Toledo while Alejandra Cadarso added five points and nine rebounds. Haleigh Holmes kept her teammates happy with six assists.

The loss ends Toutle Lake’s season. Molly Donald led the Ducks with nine points.

“For us to be in this spot at this point is definitely a victory for our season,” Toutle Lake coach Daren Dean said. “After the last couple seasons the girls were pretty excited to be here and they probably wound up just a little bit shell shocked at what happened in the first quarter and from that point it was a long way to recover.”

With the win Toledo will now advance to play Raymond in another loser-out game.

“I know they’re scrappy. They’ve got some really good shooters, and of course they’ve got the [Kyra] Gardner girl. It should be a battle for sure,” noted Layton.

Toledo will face Raymond on Tuesday in Castle Rock at 7:30 p.m.

Aselton, Sliva Hoist Pirates Over Tigers

ROCHESTER — Payton Aselton scored a game-high 17 points to eclipse the career 1,000-point mark and the Pirates put Napavine away for a 50-35 victory in the 2B District 4 playoffs Monday.

Central 2B League’s fourth-seeded Adna (19-4) moves on to face Pacific 2B League’s third-seeded Chief Leschi (17-6) in a loser-out match at 6 p.m., Wednesday, at Castle Rock High School. The winner will need to win one of its next two to advance to regionals.

“We did a good job of answering Napavine’s runs,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “[Napavine coach Shane] Shutz did a nice job today.”

Napavine ends its season with an 8-14 record. Two seniors, Riley Beeson and Chloe Stewart, played their final games in Tigers jerseys.

“Napavine played well tonight and came prepared,” Bannish said. “Kudos to them.”

Aselton also tallied a game-high nine rebounds, six assists and six steals while passing the 400 career steals and 300 career assists mark. She is now three rebounds shy of 600.

Ellis Sliva added 12 points, three rebounds and two steals for the Pirates, while Kaylin Todd contributed nine points, three rebounds and a steal.

Napavine was led by Rae Sisson’s 10 points, along with Natalya Marcial’s eight and Keira O’Neill’s eight.

Adna shot 47 percent from the field compared to 33 percent from Napavine, while the Pirates won the rebound battle 28-20.

Seagulls Fly Off in Second Half to Eliminate Loggers

By The Chronicle

For a half, the Loggers looked ready to extend their season.

The young Seagulls, however, just needed a chance to get warmed up.

Trailing 19-13 at halftime, Raymond put together a 34-point second half to beat Onalaska 47-34 Monday night in District 4 2B Girls Basketball Tournament action in Chehalis.

The loss concludes the season for the Loggers, who went 12-11.

Sophomore Kyra Gardner scored 17 to lead Raymond, including 10 points in the Seagulls’ 21-point third quarter.

Onalaska, meanwhile, got a team-high 12 points from Carmen Cleveland-Barrera and six from Morgan Hamilton, but managed just 15 second-half points.

Callie Lawrence and Brooklyn Sandridge each added five points for Onalaska.

The Loggers beat Pe Ell in the pigtail round to reach the double-elimination portion of the district tournament. Onalaska went 4-6 in Central 2B League play.

It was the final game for Cleveland-Barrera and Eryn Duryea, the only two seniors on Onalaska’s roster.

The win moves Raymond (19-3) on to another loser-out game on Wednesday against either Toledo or Toutle Lake, in Castle Rock, at 7:30 p.m.
