2B Girls District Basketball: Pirates Hooked by Fishermen
By The Chronicle
MONTESANO — Adna couldn’t match Pacific 2B League champion Ilwaco and its star Erika Glenn, who dropped a game-high 23 points, offensively as the Pirates fell 42-26 in the District 4 quarterfinals Saturday.
Glenn, last season’s Pacific 2B’s MVP, scored over half the Fishermen’s points, while the Pirates were held to single-digit scoring in every quarter after taking a 7-7 tie after one frame.
Adna (18-4) was led offensively by Payton Aselton’s 11 points. Karlee VonMoos added eight and Ellie Sliva three in the loss. The Pirates entered having won 10 of their last 11 matches.
The fourth-seeded Pirates will now face No. 7 Napavine (8-13) in the consolation bracket in a loser-out match. The Tigers lost 54-14 to Rainier on Thursday. Both teams need to win at least two more games to advance to the state tournament.
Vikings Put Clamps on Toledo to Secure Spot in District Semis
ROCHESTER — Saturday’s contest here between Mossyrock and Toledo had all the trappings of a classic playoff barnburner at the half as the teams were separated by just one point.
After the intermission, though, Mossyrock went to work extinguishing all of Toledo’s spark as they held the Central 2B League champion Tribe to just five second half points on the way to a 42-27 win in the District IV 2B girls basketball tournament.
“That’s where we wanted them in that first half. We wanted to keep it close as long as we could,” said Mossyrock coach, Autumn Moorcroft. “We knew it was going to be close for the most part and then in the third quarter when we started building that lead the girls were like, ‘OK. Let’s keep getting those stops.’ They were feeling it.”
After allowing Toledo to drop in a three-pointer at the start of the third quarter the Vikings forced 20 misses in a row until the game was out of reach. All told, Toledo shot just 2 of 22 from the floor in the second half and 10 of 47 for the contest.
“We did some different defensive looks tonight trying to shutdown Spahr and Schaplow and they executed that well tonight,” Moorcroft said. “We were really just focusing on rebounding. The last time we faced them Spahr really killed us on the boards.”
Kal Schaplow finished with a team-high seven points for Toledo while Stacie Spahr was held scoreless. Greenlee Clark and Gracie Madill added six points each in the loss.
Payton Torrey scored a game-high 17 points for Mossyrock while knocking down three of five long range attempts. Hailey Brooks chipped in 13 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Faith Mulligan added six points and 11 rebounds while Andee Nelson posted a stat line of eight points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
The win for Mossyrock puts them in the semifinals against Rainier on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Kelso. On the flipside, Toledo will now have to fight out of the losers bracket beginning with a date against Toutle Lake at 6 p.m. on Monday at W.F. West.
