CC Hoops: Blazer Men Beat Highline, Qualify for Playoffs

The Trailblazers poured in 53 points in the second half to put away Highline, 84-75, on Wednesday in NWAC West Region men’s basketball action at Michael Smith Gymnasium in the Hub City.

Five players scored in double figures for Centralia, with Austin Curry scoring 18 with 10 rebounds to lead the way.

Jaxon Clarke added 15, going 5 of 9 from behind the 3-point arc, Marqus Gilson scored 13, and Taylor Peppinger and Donovan Eiman contributed 12 and 10 points off the bench, respectively.

Centralia trailed 37-31 at halftime before rallying and pulling away in the second half.

R.A. Long product Coby Rothwell led Highline with 18 points.

The win improves Centralia’s record to 6-8 in West Region play (10-19 overall) at the end of the regular season. Highline also finished 6-8, but the Blazers had the tiebreaker, and Pierce (5-9) losing to Green River sealed Centralia the fourth-place spot and final West Region berth into the NWAC Championships tournament, which starts March 10.

 

Highline Tops Lady Blazers

Sharon Ajayi scored 29 points with 22 rebounds to lead Highline in a 66-59 win over Centralia on Wednesday in NWAC West Region women’s basketball action on the Lady Blazers’ home court.

Centralia led 20-12 after a quarter, but Highline tied things up by halftime and pulled away in the third quarter.

Courtney Kemble and Kayla Howard each scored 13 points for Centralia, with Majesty Claybrooks adding 12 and Joni Lancaster chipping in 10 with five assists. Kemble grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and Isabella Elwood added 8 points.

Centralia finished the regular season 15-12 overall and 8-6 in West Region play (third place), and advances to the NWAC Championships tournament, which starts March 8.
