College Baseball: Blazers Split With Shoreline

SHORELINE — The Trailblazers opened their NWAC baseball schedule with a split here Tuesday, beating Shoreline 5-4 in Game 1 but falling 7-6 in the nightcap of a nonleague twinbill.

Catcher Braden Smutz went 3 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs for the Blazers, with Wes Kuzminsky going 2 for 5 and Taylor Mondina going 4 of 5 with a double and an RBI.

Jack Oswood worked 5 ⅔ innings in relief, giving up four hits with three earned runs and a pair of walks.

The Blazers plated a run in the top of the ninth inning, on an RBI single from Smutz, to take a 5-3 lead, and held off Shoreline’s ninth-inning rally for the win.

Taylor South drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Shoreline the win in the nightcap.

Kuzminsky and Mondina were both 2 for 6 in Game 2, with Kuzminsky doubling and driving in a run. River Liepa went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Brady Woodrum was 1 for 3 with a double.

Centralia (1-1) plays at Yakima Valley on Saturday.
