By The Chronicle
ADNA — The Pirates had a 20-point cushion at halftime and cruised in a 69-35 win over Onalaska here Friday in Central 2B League boys basketball action.
Lyle Metzenberg led Adna with 18 points and Cody Young added 14.
“I was happy with the defense,” Adna coach Luke Salme said. “And I thought we took a positive step in terms of executing in the halfcourt. We’re always looking for little things to keep improving at this stretch, so that was good.”
The Loggers got 15 points from Ashton Haight and 11 from Alex Frazier, but trailed 22-9 after a quarter.
“Onalaska battled like crazy,” Salme said. “They compete like crazy, like a Dennis Bower-coached team will do. … They just didn’t go away.”
Blake Davis added 12 points for Adna and Conner Weed chipped in 9.
Adna (16-1, 12-1 league) plays a girls-boys doubleheader at Rainier Saturday night, starting at 5:45 p.m. Onalaska (5-12, 3-10 league) hosts Pe Ell in the same situation, and at the same time, Saturday night.

Toledo Powers Past Wahkiakum 55-28
CATHLAMET — Toledo started off a tad slow, but picked things up in the second quarter to roll past Wahkiakum, 55-28, here Friday in Central 2B League boys hoops action.
Junior Arroyo and Reece Wallace each scored 12 points to lead Toledo, which held a 7-3 lead after a quarter but increased the cushion to 22-7 at the break.
Wahkiakum, meanwhile, hit just one shot from inside the 3-point arc, but went 8 of 15 from long range. The Mules (5-9, 5-8 league) were without high-scoring senior forward Zach Brown.
Dawson Marcil added 7 points for Toledo, which shot 22 of 50 (44 percent) from the field and outrebounded the Mules 36-19.
“We had tons of open 3s. We had 18 offensive rebounds at halftime, and that kept us in it,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “We’d launch a 3, get an offensive rebound, work it around a little and launch another one, and then they started falling and our defense was good. Offensive rebounds and defense was the difference, for sure.”
Toledo (15-2, 12-1 league) hosts Winlock in a girls-boys doubleheader on Saturday, with the girls game tipping off at 5:45 p.m.

MWP Shuts Down Rainier, 63-17
RANDLE — The Timberwolves held Rainier to 2 points in two different quarters here Friday in a 63-17 Central 2B League boys hoops win.
“We’ve been working extremely hard on our defense, trying to get them better for the postseason,” MWP coach Tony Gillispie said. “We’ve been working at it, just getting up to people and trying to defend the 3-point line a little bit, and I think our kids did a pretty good job at it.”
Matt Poquette scored 22 points with eight rebounds, and Tristan Storey scored 17 with nine boards. Both players went 8 of 11 from the field.
The Timberwolves committed just 11 turnovers in the game and shot 51 percent (23 of 45) from the field.

“We really bounced back. We’ve been shooting the 3-pointer quite a lot and we shoot it pretty well from out there. Sometimes, we forget about going to the rim,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “We made that a point of emphasis of getting there tonight and we did a good job of getting to the rim and free throw line. We competed so hard rebounding and defensively. Every shot for Kalama was contested, it was an impressive display.”
Winlock (11-6, 7-6) travels to Toledo on Saturday.

Vikings Fall to Ducks
MOSSYROCK — The Vikings started the first quarter strong, but couldn’t maintain it for four quarters as Toutle Lake won 73-29 in a Central 2B League boys basketball game here on Friday night.
Justin Gootgeld scored 10 points and Evan Gootgeld added 9 points for the Vikings. Nate Hoff led Toutle Lake with 15 points.
The Ducks led 17-7 after the first quarter and scored 28 points in the second to pull away for good.
“We came out strong and forced them into a few tough shots. We got good shots and just didn’t find the bottom of the net like we hoped to,” Mossyrock coach Jordan Hunter said. “Toutle being a bigger, physical team, we were getting out of position and really just slapping kids on the wrist. The kids played hard. W did execute once we got out of the fouls and played defense by moving our feet.”
Mossyrock (1-15, 1-12) hits the road to face Kalama on Saturday.
