Friday’s Boys Basketball: Ocosta Hangs On to Beat Pe Ell

By The Chronicle

PE ELL — The Trojans nearly rallied themselves to their first win of the season here Friday night, but a shot at the buzzer rimmed out and Ocosta was able to escape with a 57-54 Pacific 2B League boys hoops win.

Jeremiah Yost led Pe Ell with 17 points and 16 rebounds, both of which were season highs.

The Wildcats held a 16-point lead with six minutes left at the game, but the host Trojans heated up to trim the lead and got off a potential game-tying shot as time expired.

“We made a strong surge. I really thought we were going to get them there,” Pe Ell coach Chris Fitzgerald said. “We had a shot at the buzzer that rimmed off that could have tied it, but man, it was fun.”

Carson Cox added 11 points for Pe Ell, and Dana Isham scored eight points with 11 rebounds.

The Trojans, though, shot just 16 of 65 from the field (25 percent), though they hit 22 of 27 free-throw attempts.

“These are great kids. They work tremendously hard, and they don’t complain, but we just don’t shoot the ball,” Fitzgerald said. “But we ran things very well tonight.”

Cole Hatton led Ocosta (6-5) with 16 points.

Pe Ell (0-12, 0-10 league) plays at Chief Leschi on Tuesday.
