Friday’s Boys Soccer: Bearcats Take Down Warriors in Shootout

By The Chronicle

W.F. West and Rochester couldn’t score in regulation or overtime, but the Bearcats came from behind in the shootout to earn a 1-0 win in an Evergreen 2A Conference boys soccer match here on Friday.

Rochester’s first two shooters scored and the Bearcats missed their first two shots for an early deficit in the shootout. Cesar Morales scored for the Bearcats and after another miss, Antheny Mendez-Leal made his penalty kick and following three straight Alex Brummer saves, the shootout was tied at two after five shooters.

Beau Booth made his shot and Rochester missed the net for the Bearcats to earn the win.

“He (Brummer) came up huge in the shootout,” W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said.

Anderson noted the performances of Luis Monzon-Barillas coming off the bench and playing with energy and also applauded the play of Aaron Zylstra on defense.

“I thought we didn’t come out in the first half with a ton of energy. They had three or four good opportunities in the first half. We couldn’t get shots on frame,” Anderson said. “We picked up the intensity a lot. The passes were great and we had a lot of opportunities in the second half. We hit the crossbar twice, post once. Their goalie came up with a couple amazing saves, point blank saves to keep it 0-0.”

W.F. West (5-6-3, 3-5) travels to Tiger Stadium on Tuesday to take on Centralia. Rochester (3-12, 0-9) hosts Aberdeen on Tuesday on senior night.
