Friday’s Girls Tennis: W.F. West Narrowly Defeats Tumwater on Games
By The Chronicle
W.F. West and Tumwater each won three matches, each won seven sets, but the Bearcats prevailed on games 57-56 in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls tennis match in Chehalis on Friday.
The Bearcats swept the singles matches. Sydney Cameron cruised past Kailey Hickey, 6-1, 6-1, in the top singles match. Joelle Chung won in the No. 2 spot over Courtney Borovec, 6-1, 6-3. Claire Kuykendall won in the No. 3 spot, defeating Leann White 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
“Sydney and Joelle did their normal thing. Last time we played them was the first time she (Kuykendall) played a singles match. Because she won, I played here there again,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “In the third set, I think we saw at least four rallies where it was more than 10 shots before somebody won the point. She won every one of them, I’m really pleased with the play of the freshman.”
Tumwater earned the sweep in doubles matches. Sophia Koelsch and Abby Bond defeated W.F. West’s Stephanie Drummond and Sadie Jerome, 6-0, 6-0, in the top doubles match. Tiana Jeffries and Kaylynne Dowling fell to Josie Grimm and Ari Kee, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Abby Jasper and Hannah Kolb completed the sweep for the Thunderbirds, taking down Mak Moore and Lexis Haller, 6-2, 6-4.
State noted that a game won by Jeffries and Dowling in their three set match was the difference in their close match with Tumwater.
“That was the match that finished it off. I knew it was going to be really close, we were down 2-5, won the next game, 3-5,” State said. “Pulling out that game, long drawn out game, that was the difference. Every game counts, that one at that particular point in time, was really critical.”
W.F. West (9-2, 4-1) hosts Aberdeen on Monday to complete a rained out match in Aberdeen and play another full match against the Bobcats.
