Friday’s Men’s College Basketball: Trail Blazers Top Mt. Hood at Red Devil Classic
By The Chronicle
LONGVIEW — A big game from Marqus Gilson propelled the Trail Blazers past Mt. Hood by a score of 79-71 in non-league NWAC basketball action at the Red Devil Classic here on Friday.
Gilson, a second year center out of Utah, finished the contest with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds. That output included a tidy 9 of 13 shooting performance from the field.
“He got in a little bit of foul trouble in the second half that kept him off the court a little bit but he was still able to come out with a big night,” noted Centralia coach Jason Moir.
Liam Murphy added 16 points and five assists for Centralia while Johnny Greene Jr. and Collin Prangley chipped in 11 points each. Greene also grabbed six rebounds for the Trail Blazers.
Murphy is a combo guard who transferred in from Whatcom College. Moir says he will be counted on to both dish it and pass it this season.
“He played extremely well. He pretty much took the lead today and ran the point for us today,” said Moir of Murphy. “We are transfer heavy in our guard rotation so we obviously expect a lot out of them.”
A stingy defensive effort by Centralia kept the scoring low from the tip. Centralia College was able to outpace the Saints in both periods with a 33-26 advantage in the first half and a 46-45 edge to close out the win.
Two Mt. Hood players came into the game shooting fifty percent from three point range on the season but neither team was feeling warm and fuzzy from long range on Friday. The Saints hit just two of 16 three points shots for a 12.5 percent clip while the Trailblazers hit on only two of their 15 three point attempts. Moir noted that the Saints were 0-8 from downtown in the first half.
“That was a big focus of ours was getting defenders to the perimeter with a hand up,” said Moir. “They did a great job.”
On Saturday Centralia will play Everett Community College at 6 p.m. at Myklebust Gymnasium. If they win they will play in the championship game at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
