Dual Duels: W.F. West and Centralia Take on Port Angeles and Tillamook

With the home stretch of the prep wrestling season rounding into view the Bearcats and Tigers were looking for some formidable competition here Friday night. It was a request that the Roughriders and Cheesemakers were more than happy to oblige during a non-league, but not quite friendly, dual-dual wrestling meet in the Mint City.

In the first go round the home mat Bearcats bested Port Angeles 55-13 while Tillamook toppled Centralia 57-9. In the second tilt the traveling teams switched ends in the gymnasium before the Roughriders dispatched Centralia 36-28 and W.F. West hung on for a 36-27 win over the Cheesemakers.

A thrilling triple overtime win by Mason Morones in the second to last match of the evening allowed the Bearcats to claim victory on their home floor against a Tillamook team that boasts more than a dozen state-ranked wrestlers. Morones won that 138-pound match 8-6 on a takedown over Sam Connelly.

“I was surprised. I thought Tillamook was going to take it to us pretty good,” said W.F. West coach Jamie Rakevich. “They’ve been coming here for years. They’ve been coming here since before I came here. They’re always a tough, good, hard-nosed team so it’s nice to see them.”

In his first match Morones pinned Gavin DeBore of Port Angeles in the first period.

Henry Robbins picked up a pair of pins in order to secure two wins for W.F. West in the 106-pound weight class. Robbins pinned Carlos Rodrigues of Port Angeles in the first period and pinned Brad Rieger of Tillamook with a nursery room cradle in the second period.

“He wrestled really well. He’s down at (106 pounds) finally and wrestled really tough,” Rakevich said of the freshman Robbins.

While Robbins was wrestling down a bracket from where he’s typically been stationed most of his fellow Bearcats stepped up a peg or two in order to cover as many weight classes as possible.

“We had everybody bumped up and I thought we had a bunch of guys that wrestled pretty tough,” said Rakevich.

Carver Brennan (160) and Chris Powe (182) both picked up first round pins against Port Angeles for W.F. West. Isaac Reavis won his 195-pound match by a score of 12-2 and Chase Conaway registered a first round pin in the heavyweight match. Rounding out the Bearcats romp over the Roughriders was Bo Davis (126), Caleb Walters (132) and Zach Evans (138) who all earned victories by points.

W.F. West looked lost in their first three matches against the Cheesemakers and quickly found themselves down 11-0. A hot streak quickly melted the Tillamook lead away, though.

Isaac Reavis dialed in a last second near fall in order to complete a comeback win by a score of 7-6 in his 195-pound match to get the momentum turned back in the Bearcats’ favor. Bryson Boyd then turned in a first round pin at 220-pounds and Conaway wound up winning by injury default in the heavyweight match. After Robbins earned his second pin of the night and Kayden Ryan won by forfeit the Cheesemakers came back to claim three matches in a row and they would have taken the team lead if Morones hadn’t outlasted his opponent in their overtime battle.

“It could have been a closer match but they had that injury with that heavy weight, which was too bad, but then Henry turned around and got that pin and that was big,” noted Rakevich. “Actually, Bryson Boyd had a big win for us as a sophomore getting thrown out there and Isaac pulled that one out and kind of got us back on track.”

Earning a pair of team victories was a nice bonus for the Bearcats but Rakevich insists there are lessons to be learned in losses as well. That’s why he made sure to bring back the Cheesemakers and their horde of ranked wrestlers.

“They’ve actually got 15 (ranked wrestlers). They had 12 wrestling in the lineup tonight and they’ve got three backups so they are really darn good. They’ve got a really good team this year so it’s nice to wrestle them and kind of see where we are at…We came out fairly unscathed, besides a broken nose,” Rakevich noted. “Even the guys that lost, I mean, Zach Evans wrestled great. That kid (he faced) took second at state last year and third the year before so he’s legit. And the kid that Carver Brennan lost to (6th ranked Tommy Cruz), I mean Carver’s wrestling up 20 pounds almost and competing.”

The individual victories were few and far between for Centralia as they dropped both team matches. Justin Lake was the only Tiger to register win in both of his matches and in that curdled Tillamook affair he was the only Tiger to earn any points at all when he defeated his opponent 6-2 in the 138-pound match.

However, Centralia bounced back against Port Angeles to keep the score respectable. Porter Harris registered a first round pin in his 120-pound match, Lake won by fall in the third round of his 138-pound match, Hylton blanked his opponent 10-0 at 170-pounds, and Aiden Goodrich locked in a first round pin in the heavyweight festivities.

W.F. West, Centralia and Tenino will all compete on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the Bearcat Invite in Chehalis.
