Centralia Sweeps Tumwater
TUMWATER — Centralia collected 12 hits in the first game and took advantage of six Tumwater errors in the second game to earn a sweep of Tumwater in a legion baseball doubleheader here last Thursday.
Centralia won Game 1, 5-2. Benito Valencia started on the mound for Centralia and pitched the first five innings, striking out 15 batters. Noah Aliff pitched the final two innings and retired all six batters he faced.
At the plate, Zack Rone was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Sawyer Kassell was 2-for-2 and Matt House hit a two run single in the fourth inning.
Centralia took a 1-0 lead after the first inning but Tumwater scored a run in the second to tie the game and a run in the third to gain a 2-1 lead. Centralia answered right away with three runs in the fourth for a 4-2 lead. Centralia tacked on one more run in the sixth as insurance.
“Both guys were outstanding and offensively, we had some good at bats and made better adjustments than last time out,” Centralia coach Rex Ashmore said.
In Game 2, Centralia won 13-3 in six innings. Centralia plated three runs in the first and one run in the second inning before pulling away with six runs in the third inning. Centralia tacked on a run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to end the game with the mercy rule.
Sawyer Vogel had two hits and a RBI. Aliff came on in relief in the second inning and retired 14 of the 16 batters he faced with eight strikeouts.
“This wasn’t a very clean game by either side and we took advantage of a lot of mistakes by them,” Ashmore said. “Tumwater has a very young team and we just took advantage of what they gave us. Real happy with the pitching from our guys the entire night.”
Centralia (2-1) hosts Timberline on Thursday before the Brian Cox Memorial Tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Centralia and Chehalis.
