Monday’s 2B Boys BB: Cline Lifts Winlock Past Ocosta
SCORING: Cline Scores 29 Points, Cardinals Advance to First Round
By Matt Baide
WINLOCK — In a win-or-go-home scenario, Bryce Cline made sure the Cardinals had at least two more games this season, scoring 29 points to lead the Cardinals to an 84-70 win over Ocosta in a District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament play-in game here on Monday.
The Cardinals advance to face Chief Leschi on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Rochester in the first round of the double-elimination tournament.
The Cardinals had beaten Ocosta by 39 points back in December.
“Everytime we got a lead, they fought back. They’re resilient. I was pretty impressed with the effort they showed tonight,” Cardinal coach Nick Bamer said. “But I’m very happy we are sticking around in the tournament.”
Cline was 5 of 9 from behind the arc and 6 of 10 inside the arc. Dawson Hall added 16 points and Nicholas Patching had 15, including shooting 3 of 7 from the 3-point line.
“Tonight, it was hard to tell them not to shoot. The Cline kid was on fire,” Bamer said. “I haven’t looked to see what he made, but everytime he shot it, it seemed like it went in. He kind of carried us for a while tonight.”
The Cardinals shot 47 percent from the field, including 9 of 25 from downtown.
“We like the 3-point line. As a program, we like the 3-point line. Sometimes we fall in love with it a little bit too much. We were really emphasizing getting to the basket, getting to the free throw line,” Bamer said. “I don’t think we did a great job of getting to the foul line tonight, but we did an OK job of getting to the basket. When you’re able to get layups, it opens up everything else.”
Winlock started off strong, causing seven Ocosta turnovers in the first quarter to lead 29-13. Ocosta battled back in the second quarter, but the Cardinals led 44-33 at halftime.
The Cardinals were able to maintain a double digit lead in the second half, outscoring Ocosta 40-37 to earn the victory.
Winlock was in some foul trouble during the game, and Bamer commended the play of Alan Contreras, Coleson Richendollar and Carter Whitehead coming off the bench, with Contreras scoring 5 points with four rebounds.
The Cardinals advance to play the No. 3 seed Chief Leschi out of the Pacific 2B League. The Warriors were 14-6 overall and lost 65-48 to Toledo, the only C2BL team have they faced.
“I’m going to get film on Leschi tonight and we’ll figure out how the heck to try to stop them,” Bamer said. “They’re a pretty good ball club, so we’ll give it our best shot and see what happens.”
In Monday’s other play-in games, Toutle Lake beat Rainier, 63-34, and will face Ilwaco on Wednesday at W.F. West High School; Raymond beat Kalama, 54-45, and will face Napavine on Wednesday at W.F. West; and North Beach beat Wahkiakum, 80-63, and will face Morton-White Pass on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Rochester.
