Monday’s Boys Basketball: Loggers Hold On for Nonleague Win at Hoquiam

By The Chronicle

HOQUIAM — Onalaska survived a 30-point performance from Cameron Bumstead here Monday night to beat Hoquiam, 56-52, in nonleague boys hoops action.

The Loggers (14-5) got 18 points from Kayden Allison, and took a 29-26 lead into halftime despite losing guard Carter Whitehead to foul trouble for the second quarter.

“Overall, it’s a good win on the road,” Onalaska coach Wayne Nelson said, “but we’ve still got things to work on before districts.”

Danny Dalsted scored 11 points and Whitehead finished with 10 for Onalaska, which shot 22 of 62 from the field but went 5 of 26 (19%) from outside.

The Loggers also held a 36-27 advantage on the glass, with Ashton Haight and Cade Lawrence each grabbing eight rebounds.

Lawrence also played well defensively on Bumstead late in the game, Nelson noted.

“Down the stretch, I thought we did a good job guarding him,” Nelson noted. “Lawrence guarded him late, and he only had a couple points the last four minutes of the game.”

Hoquiam (5-12) went 21 of 52 (40%) from the field, but Bumstead, a senior guard, was the only Grizzly to score in double figures.

Onalaska closes out its Central 2B League slate of games on Thursday when it hosts Rainier. The Loggers can clinch fourth place, and avoid the play-in round of games on Feb. 11, with a victory over the Mountaineers.
