Monday’s Prep Boys Soccer: Trio of Mendez-Leal Assists Help Bearcats Over Black Hills
By The Chronicle
TUMWATER — Five different players scored for the Bearcats here Monday night as W.F. West defeated Black Hills 5-3 in an Evergreen 2A Conference boys soccer contest.
While each of the Bearcats’ goals had a different owner, three of those scores were assisted by the same player — Antheny Mendez-Leal.
“Antheny is really doing well. He’s a great distributor. He had a lot of great dynamic runs going forward tonight,” said W.F. West coach Allen Anderson. “He’s such a good ball handler himself that he draws a lot of attention. Defenses just sort of gravitate to him. Tonight he did a great job spraying the job out to all of his teammates and getting them opportunities.”
Mendez-Leal’s first assist came in the 10th minute on a score by Cesar Morales. Then, in the 34th minute, Mendez-Leal found Luis Monzon-Barillas open for another assisted score that sent W.F. West into intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Fresh out of halftime, Tyler Laufenberg gave W.F. West a 3-0 advantage when he was assisted by Angel Hernandez in the 43rd minute.
The Wolves managed a bit of a comeback over the next dozen minutes of game play, though, as Evan Ellison scored a penalty kick goal in the 47th minute and then ran in a run of the mill goal in the 56th minute.
Leo Barillas helped the Bearcats recover the bearings with an unassisted goal in the 58th minute before Black Hills struck back with a goal by Luke Ellision in the 67th minute.
Finally, in stoppage time, Angel Hernandez found the back of the net off of Mendez-Leal’s third assist of the contest.
W.F. West managed 11 shots in the contest while their goalie, Alex Brummer, stopped 14 of 17 shots from the Wolves.
“I thought the team played really well tonight. We switched formations about a week ago and they are really getting settled into it,” said Anderson. “I really like the way they are attacking and it’s really positive when you can get five different guys to score in one game.”
W.F. West (4-6-3, 2-5 league) will host Black Hills at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Forks Blanks Tenino
FORKS — Tenino had a case of the Monday’s in Forks, falling to the Spartans 8-0 in a 1A Evergreen League boys soccer game.
Seth Johnson scored four goals for Forks and Luis Perez added two goals. Juan Flores tallied one goal and Tenino scored an own goal in the 23rd minute.
Devin Billings made 11 saves for the Beavers.
“It was a tale of two halves. The first half we played one of our best halves of soccer all season and definitely our best half when we have played against one of the top three teams in the league,” Tenino coach Kevin Schultz said. “If not for a miss-hit clearance that led to an own goal we would have been down just 1-0 at half. Second half though we just fell asleep for about the first ten minutes and the next thing we know it’s 6-0. Seems like we take one step forward and then two steps back.”
Schultz noted the performance of Billings in net and also pointed to Anthony Levi and Nate Wood, noting each had one of their best games of the season.
Tenino (3-7-1, 3-6) hosts Hoquiam on Wednesday in a league contest.
