SEMIFINALS: Purvis Scores 27, Tigers Face Ducks in Semifinals

By Matt Baide

ROCHESTER — Napavine and Willapa Valley came down to the wire here in a District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game, and Jordan Purvis hit a big 3-pointer late and Dawson Stanley made two free throws with less than five seconds left to help Napavine win 57-56.

The Tigers advance to face Toutle Lake on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Kelso. The Ducks upset Toledo 70-46 in Montesano.

“We knew it was going to be a 32-minute game. We talked about it for two days getting ready for these guys. We’ve been watching them as the season went and they’re solid as a rock,” Napavine coach Rex Stanley said. “I told them yesterday at practice, these district tournament games, you could put four minutes on the clock and have it be tied and that’s exactly what this was, basically.”

Purvis recorded 27 points and seven rebounds. Dawson Stanley added 8 points and seven rebounds and Noah Lantz also had 8 points.

Matt Pearson led Willapa Valley with 16 points.

With less than a minute remaining and Napavine leading 52-50, Purvis had the ball at the top of the 3-point arc looking around for teammates, but set his feet and drained a 3-pointer to put the Tigers up 5.

Purvis said the situation was an isolation play with him at the top of the key, giving him the option to drive and score or kick the ball out.

“What happened was I saw they were sagging on me so they weren’t respecting the 3-point game,” he said. “So I decided to go through my legs, pull up on him and hit it.”

Pearson converted a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 55-53. Cade Evander blocked a Viking shot on the next play, which was recovered by Dawson Stanley, who was immediately fouled.

Stanley hit both free throws, and Willapa Valley had enough time to hit a three as time expired.

“Tell you what, I give credit to Valley. They would not go away,” Rex Stanley said. “There was a couple times in that fourth quarter where I thought, OK, we’re up two or three possessions. We could get a couple more stops and string this out, and they just would not die.”

Willapa Valley outrebounded Napavine 35-24, but Napavine shot better from the field and forced 16 turnovers to earn the win.

The Tigers and Ducks played once in the regular season, a 70-67 win for the Tigers in Napavine.

“We’ve been playing the Toutle kids since these kids were in grade school. They know everything about us and we know everything about them,” Stanley said. “I anticipate it being similar to the first time we played, tight the whole way and it will be a really good game.”

Morton-White Pass Powers Past Life Christian Into Semifinals

MONTESANO — Matt Poquette recorded a triple-double to lead the Timberwolves to a 62-43 win in a District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game here on Saturday.

The Timberwolves advance to the semifinals, where they’ll face Adna on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Kelso.

Poquette had 17 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists.

“Matt is still getting two or three guys coming to him and he’s learning to dish and hit the open man and it’s making our team much better,” MWP coach Tony Gillispie said. “Give him a ton of credit. He’s finding people and it’s making us better.”

Kade Gillispie added 15 points and Tristan Storey recorded 10 points for MWP.

Freshman Omari Maulana led Life Christian with 15 points.

Morton-White Pass led 18-5 after a quarter and 34-15 by halftime, allowing just three LCA field goals before the intermission.

“We played really well. We jumped out to another good start. Towards the end of the season, we’ve been having some first quarters where we didn’t come out and play well,” Gillispie explained. “I thought our defense was really good and we did good job of sharing the basketball.”

Adna and MWP split the two regular season meetings. Adna won 68-62 in Adna, and MWP won 55-54 in Morton.

“I thought Kade shot the ball well. We had good balance scoring,” Gillispie said. “We’ve got a tough test against Adna.”

Toutle Lake Upsets Toledo

MONTESANO — Toledo had an off night and Toutle Lake took advantage, as the Ducks upset the Indians 70-46 in a District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game here on Saturday.

Reece Wallace led Toledo with 24 points and Fano Arceo-Hansen added 8 points and seven rebounds. Toutle Lake’s Cam Swanson led all scorers with 25 points.

Toledo faces Chief Leschi on Monday in a loser out game, with the time and location of the game to be determined.

The Indians shot just 24 percent from the field.

“We did not shoot well. We cut it to 13 at one point, and we messed up on defense. It wasn’t ever close, they just outplayed us,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “The old saying, play a team three times, they’re not going to keep doing the same thing. They caught us on a bad night to top it off. It’s disappointing, but it’s not the end of the world.”

The Ducks built a 11-3 lead after the first quarter and scored 23 points in the second quarter to lead 34-15 at halftime. Toledo played better in the second half and cut the lead to 13, but couldn’t muster a comeback.

Chief Leschi lost to Winlock 58-44 Wednesday in the first round of the district tournament.
