Saturday’s College Basketball: Centralia Cruises Past Pierce

Centralia had four starters and five players total score in double figures to defeat Pierce 94-51 in a NWAC West Division men’s basketball game at Michael Smith Gymnasium in Centralia on Saturday.

LaBrandon Price led the Blazers with 16 points, five rebounds and three steals. Dionte’ Dixon added 13 points and four steals and Marqus Gilson chipped in 12 points. Liam Murphy came off the bench and totaled 11 points and Collin Prangley had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Pierce’s DJ Kerson scored 21 to lead all scorers and Christian Davis tallied 11 points.

The Blazers shot 54 percent from the field, including 47 percent from three point territory. Pierce shot 35 percent from the field and turned the ball over 27 times including 12 Centralia steals.

Centralia shot 62 percent from the field in the first half and led 51-22 at intermission. It was more of the same in the second half as the Blazers outscored the Raiders, 43-29.

The Blazers (19-9, 9-4) have won three in a row and will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday on the road against Highline.

Women’s Basketball

Blazers Fall to Raiders

Centralia struggled in most categories against Pierce at Michael Smith Gymnasium on Saturday as the Raiders took advantage for a 75-66 win in NWAC West Division women’s basketball action.

Lindsey Nurmi led the Blazers with 15 points and six rebounds and Devanie Kleemeyer chipped in 13 points. Isabella Elwood grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Kaelin Williams-Kennedy tallied 23 points to lead all scorers. Selina Mayo chipped in 11 points for the Raiders.

Pierce won the the rebounding battle, 48-31. Centralia shot 35 percent from the field including 18 percent from behind the arc and converted just eight of 22 free throws.

The Blazers jumped out to a 22-13 lead after one quarter but Pierce turned it on in the second quarter and gained a 40-34 lead at halftime. Pierce held Centralia to eight points in the third quarter to build a lead and were able to hang on for the win despite the Blazers’ 24 points in the fourth quarter.

Centralia (14-13, 8-5) sits in second place in the West Division and will hit the road on Wednesday to face Highline in the regular season finale.
