By The Chronicle

NAPAVINE — Freshman Natalya Marcial scored 14 points to lead Napavine to a 37-30 win over Winlock in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Saturday.

Addison Hall, a freshman, scored 17 points for Winlock to lead all scorers.

The Tigers built a 13-4 lead after one quarter, but Winlock fought back in the second and cut the Napavine lead to 18-14 at halftime.

Napavine played a solid third quarter, holding the Cardinals to just three points to gain a 32-17 lead going into the fourth quarter. Winlock scored 13 points in the final frame but it wasn’t enough for a comeback.

“I thought we fought very hard. I thought the kids responded the next day. Winlock was our first league game and it was important to get a victory to find a way to get into the district tournament,” Napavine coach Shane Schutz said. “It was a huge win after the previous night, I was really happy. We fought hard and showed a lot of courage. Winlock never quit either, they came storming back.”

Napavine (2-6, 1-0) is on the road Tuesday at Rainier while Winlock (2-6, 0-1) hosts Toledo on Wednesday in a C2BL game.

The Pirates led 21-0 after one quarter and kept it rolling in the second quarter to lead 38-2 at halftime.

“The pressure really bothered them, they’re rebuilding down there. We tried to work on some things to beat the upper echelon teams,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “It was good to work on some things. Overall, it was pretty good.”

Adna (5-1, 1-0) hosts Montesano on Wednesday in a non-league game.

“We did a lot of things really well. We outrebounded them and got 72 shots up. We ran the court well tonight,” Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps said. “We have a few new additions, a couple more bodies out there for us to get subs. With Carper coming in, a double-double in the first night for her, she’ll definitely be an impact player.”

Pe Ell (2-4) travels to South Bend on Tuesday for a P2BL contest.

Kalama Outlasts Mossyrock

MOSSYROCK — Kalama scored 24 points in the third quarter to pull away from Mossyrock and earn a 63-39 win in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Saturday.

The Chinooks led 9-6 after one quarter and played better in the second quarter to lead 27-16 at halftime. Kalama’s big third quarter put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

“We started out slow and had foul trouble really early. We had a hard time getting the ball to the basket,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “Our issue that we need to overcome is turnovers, we had over 30 turnovers.”

Moorcroft applauded the play of Heather Edgar, noting her hard work in each game. She also commended the leadership from Andee Nelson.
