Saturday’s Prep Softball: Titans Blank Northwest Christian
By The Chronicle
NAPAVINE — Olivia Matlock pitched a one hitter for Pe Ell-Willapa Valley in a 4-0 win against Northwest Christian of a non-league softball game here on Saturday.
Matlock struck out 12 batters and Titan catcher Grace Hodel threw out two runners trying to steal second and picked off a runner at third in the win.
“Errorless defense to go with a one hitter spelled success. She (Alison Shaler) was throwing well,” PWV coach Ken Olson said. “Watching her warm up, she was throwing hard. It was nice to see us compete really well, only struck out once. We were putting the ball in play all over the place, just a great game for us. I can’t say enough about how everybody played.”
PWV took the lead in the second inning. Britney Patrick hit a double and moved to third base on a passed ball. Grace Hodel hit a single to bring home Patrick for a 1-0 advantage.
In the fifth, the Titans scored two runs. Jeorgi Ritzman hit a single and after a fielder’s choice, Morgan Coady hit a RBI double. Katelyn McGough stepped up to the plate and hit a single up the middle to score Coady for a 3-0 lead after five innings. Patrick hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to insure the victory.
Olson noted the brilliant performance of Matlock in the circle against the Crusaders, a team that defeated the Titans in the quarterfinals of the 2018 state tournament.
Pe Ell-Willapa Valley (8-2, 6-0) travels to North Beach on Tuesday for a Pacific 2B League doubleheader.
