Thursday’s Boys Basketball: Montesano Dominates Centralia
By The Chronicle
MONTESANO — Centralia’s William Brown scored 17 points, but Montesano was too much for the Tigers in a 71-41 win in a non-league boys basketball game here on Thursday.
Malakai Emmons scored 10 points, had four assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Michael Ajoge also had seven rebounds.
Evan Bates led all scorers with 19 points and Sam Winter added 14 points for the Bulldogs.
Montesano jumped out to a 20-11 lead after one quarter and carried that momentum into the second quarter for a 38-17 lead at halftime.
Centralia coach Kyle Donahue noted the Tigers had trouble handling the pressure of Montesano’s defense.
“They put a little bit of pressure on us and we turned the ball over quite a bit. A lot of poor decision making at times, even without the offense not getting a great look,” Donahue said. “Having a lot of turnovers created a lack of shots. When you turn the ball over that many times, it’s hard to score. We need to do a little better job handling the pressure.”
The Tigers handled the pressure better in the second half, but it was too late as the Bulldogs cruised to the win.
Donahue noted the performance of Nate Crews working hard on the defensive end and also noted Brown running the floor and handling the pressure well from Montesano. He was also pleased with Garrett Strophy coming off the bench and giving the Tigers quality minutes.
Centralia (0-2) hosts Franklin Pierce on Saturday in a non-league game.
