Thursday’s Boys Soccer: Bearcats Hold Off Hilanders
By The Chronicle
W.F. West was able to fend off Kelso in the second half here on Thursday in order to secure a 2-1 non-league boys soccer victory.
In the first half, though, it was all Bearcats. Adal Vargas punched in a goal off of a pass from Angel Hernandez in the fourth minute, then Antheny Mendez-Leal scored a goal in the 26th minute with an assist by Trevor Jenson.
That 2-0 lead held through the intermission until Kelso’s Sebastian Valencia scored a goal in the 44th minute.
Bearcat goalkeeper Cole Hinton managed to shut the Highlanders out from there on out to preserve the win. Alex Brummer held Kelso scoreless in the first half for W.F. West as the two Bearcats split goalie duties.
“We had a couple of lucky breaks. They had a couple of shots that went off the post, but you know, every once in awhile you need those lucky bounces,” said W.F. West coach Allen Anderson.
Kelso managed 15 shots on goal for the game while W.F. West put 10 shots on the mark.
“I’m real happy with how we did tonight. This was without question our best performance of the year,” said Anderson. “Today was the first game of the season where we had the whole team healthy and playing together and that made a huge difference.”
Anderson pointed out Christian Mathuzima’s return to the pitch as a particularly invigorating component to the Bearcats’ operation.
“He’s a big leader for us in the midfield,” Anderson said. “It was exciting to watch the team play today.”
W.F. West (1-1-3) will host Montesano on Friday.
