Thursday’s Girls Basketball: Rochester Rolls Past Hoquiam
By The Chronicle
HOQUIAM — Rochester’s defense tallied 19 steals to help the Warriors earn a 61-39 win over Hoquiam in a non-league girls basketball game here on Thursday.
Paige Winter recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Megan Elkins scored 17 points, sinking five 3-pointers and Lexi Sederberg-Jones added 12 points and five steals for the Warriors. Madison Bates also had five steals.
Rylee Vonhoff scored nine points to lead Hoquiam.
Rochester coach Davina Serdahl said her team was focused on their defense tonight and it paid off in the stat sheet and on the scoreboard.
“I was pleased, our defense certainly got our offense going tonight. We didn’t really play great defense last game. That was our focus tonight, more pressure,” Serdahl said. “That led to a lot of our offensive scoring. Megan Elkins was a spark on defense. I was really pleased with that. We have to have other players step up and tonight, it was her turn.”
The Warriors held Hoquiam to single digit scoring in the first two quarters to lead 37-18 at halftime. It was more of the same in the second half, with Rochester outscoring Hoquiam 24-21.
Rochester (3-3) travels to Tenino and plays at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in a boys girls doubleheader.
