Toledo Edges Rainier to Stay Perfect in C2BL

RAINIER — Kal Schaplow scored 15 points, and Toledo held off Rainier 38-35 here Tuesday night to stay perfect in the Central 2B League girls basketball standings.

The Indians led 30-22 going into the fourth quarter and withstood a late rally from the Mountaineers (12-4, 4-2 league).

The Indians, though, held Rainier to just 24% shooting (13 of 54) from the field.

“That’s definitely our calling card, is defense, and we played really good team defense tonight,” Layton said, singling out Gracie Madill in that regard.

Layton also noted that Schaplow played well defensively, guarding Rainier star Kaeley Schultz and holding Schultz — last year’s C2BL co-MVP — to 15 points.
