Rachel Wilkerson got the Tigers in position, and Carissa Kaut shot them over the finish line.

The two Centralia guards each hit four 3-pointers on Wednesday night, helping the Tigers force overtime and eventually beat Tumwater, 54-50, in Evergreen 2A Conference girls basketball action.

Kaut, who finished with 17 points, hit a 3-pointer just before the regulation buzzer to tie things up at 41-41.

“It’s for Rachel and Ellie (Corwin) to kind of pick-and-roll, and then Kaut’s our third option off of that,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said, of the final play that sprung the sophomore for the big shot. “She just improvised and then just went and shot a 3 and made a play for us that we needed, big-time.”

Kaut added a 3-pointer in overtime that put Centralia up 49-43 with 1:30 left to play, and the Tigers outscored Tumwater 13-9 in the extra frame.

It was the third overtime game of the season for the Tigers, who were blanked in the extra period in a loss to Elma early in the season and beat Tumwater in overtime, 51-43, on Jan. 4.

“I’m happy with the way we played,” Ashmore said, “especially at that time in the game.”

Wilkerson, meanwhile, scored 18 points and hit back-to-back 3s in the third quarter when the Tigers trailed 29-21.

Centralia had led 19-11 midway through the second quarter, but Tumwater cut the lead to 19-15 at halftime and opened the third on a 9-0 run to take the lead.

“Usually we’ve been a good third-quarter team, but we struggled, and their defense really gives us (problems),” Ashmore said. “They were taking Ellie away and hitting shots. … Rachel hit those big 3s to get us back into it, and we kept attacking, got some free throws and got back into it.”

Corwin, the Tigers’ senior center, scored 12 points with 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. Wilkerson added eight rebounds and five assists, and Kaut and Hannah Porter each chipped in six rebounds.

Centralia shot 9 of 25 from behind the 3-point arc, but just 5 of 28 from inside it. Kaut and Wilkerson were both 4 of 9 from deep. The Tigers also hit 17 of 28 foul shots.

Sophia Koelsch led Tumwater with 20 points. The Thunderbirds (4-12, 3-4 league) went 20 of 73 from the field (27 percent).

Centralia (12-5, 5-2 league) hosts Black Hills (5-2 league) on Friday.
