Wednesday’s 2B Boys BB: Winlock Upsets Chief Leschi to Advance to Quarterfinals
ADVANCE: Whitehead Scores 19 Points to Lead Cardinals
By Matt Baide
ROCHESTER — Like the Philadelphia Eagles, Winlock enjoys being the underdog.
The Cardinals channelled that underdog energy to upset Chief Leschi 58-44 in a District 4 2B boys basketball tournament first round game here on Wednesday.
It’s the second year in a row the Cardinals knocked off a higher-ranked opponent in districts, after bumping No. 2-seed Ilwaco last year.
“We’re pretty happy right now,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “That’s a good team. They’re athletic. We weren’t scared but we were aware of their athleticism.”
Winlock advances to play the Central 2B League No. 2-seed Adna on Saturday, with the location and time to be determined.
Carter Whitehead led the Cardinals with 19 points and seven rebounds. Nicholas Patching contributed 15 points and Bryce Cline scored 12.
“(It) feels great,” Whitehead said. “I didn’t play good in our first game, but I felt like my coach Rich (Cline), he kind of gave me a pep talk and told me that I need to play well and I feel like I showed it tonight.”
The Cinderella run is nothing new to Winlock. The Cardinals upset Ilwaco in last year’s district tournament before losing a close game to Toledo and being eliminated by Rainier the following game.
Winlock led 17-8 after one quarter, saw Chief Leschi pull to 28-24 at halftime, and took a 13-point lead on a Patching 3-pointer as the fire alarm went off and paused the game with around four minutes left to play.
“Stylistically, we normally just go get up and down and that’s how we play best. We didn’t feel like we could do that with them because that’s how they play, too, and I thought they might be a little bit better at it then us,” Bamer said. “The kids bought into the game plan and walked the ball up the court. To their credit, they executed when we needed to execute, hit some big shots, and Patching’s 3 with the fire alarm going off is pretty good.”
Adna beat Winlock 75-45 in the regular season, but the Cardinals are just fine with being the underdogs once again on Saturday.
“We’re Winlock, we are born underdogs. We could be ranked No. 1 in the state right now and still be an underdog,” Bamer said. “I think we’re used to it. We’re finally starting to expect to win a little bit more though. We’re excited for a test on Saturday with Adna.”
