Wednesday’s Boys Basketball: Pirates Race Past Oroville 69-23

Pirates Race Past Oroville 69-23

CHELAN — Adna scored a whopping 33 points in the first quarter and never looked back in a 69-23 boys hoops win over Oroville here Wednesday in the first round of the Chelan Holiday Tournament.

Cody Young led a quartet of Pirates in double figures with 14 points. Trevor Thornburg added 12, Lyle Metzenberg scored 11 and Conner Weed added 10.

Blake Davis chipped in 9 points.

“Everything went right,” Adna coach Luke Salme said. “We executed well, shot it well, defended well, and steamrolled from the tip.”

Adna shot 26 of 54 (48 percent) from the field and went 9 of 11 (82 percent) at the foul line. The Pirates led 46-10 at halftime.

“That’s a great way to respond from having a few days off,” Salme added.

Adna (7-1, 4-1 Central 2B League) plays Chelan on Thursday night in the boys tournament championship game. The host goats beat Life Christian, 55-53, on Wednesday behind 20 points from Quinn Stamps.

The Pirates return to league play on Tuesday at Mossyrock.

Fife Overpowers Centralia 79-47

FIFE — The Tigers took a Christmas break trip north and wound up on the short end of a 79-47 nonleague boys hoops contest with Fife here Wednesday night.

The Trojans (9-2), currently No. 6 in the Tacoma News Tribune’s 2A boys rankings, had five players hit double figures in the win.

“Fife’s a really good team. They’ve got 10 kids that were really just interchangeable, good, solid basketball players. You could tell by their scoring,” Centralia coach Kyle Donahue said. “Their pressure got to us early, and the physicality — they really got into you, and we just didn’t adjust very well early on.”

Bryson Williams and Tavis Johnson each scored 13 points for Fife. Cooper Schelbert added 12, Malachi Afework scored 11 and Brian Mitchell chipped in 10.

Fife shot 31 of 55 (56 percent) from the field, while Centralia attempted only 31 shots, thanks in part to 34 turnovers.

“A lot of it was their pressure, but we just had a lot of unforced turnovers today,” Donahue said.

Ben Janssan led Centralia with 25 points.

“He played pretty well tonight,” Donahue said. “He did a really good job attacking the basket and looking to finish and get to the line.”

Jackson Grimm added 9 points for Centralia, while Tyler Ashmore scored 8 with four rebounds.

Centralia (3-6) plays at Washington on Friday night.

Walker, Vikings Shoot Past Trojans

MENLO — Pe Ell fell behind early and couldn’t catch up in a 61-47 loss to Willapa Valley here Wednesday in the boys side of the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Tournament.

Ryan Shepherd scored 13 points to lead Pe Ell, and Kaleb McCalden added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman Logan Walker led Willapa Valley with 21 points.

Twenty-two turnovers, however, were a bit too much for the Trojans to overcome.

“There were times where they’re unforced,” Pe Ell coach Chris Fitzgerald said. “Overall, we didn’t play that bad. We’re still a step behind and 70 games behind (as a team).”

Matt Pearson added 12 points and Ryon Ashley chipped in 11 for Willapa Valley.

Pe Ell (0-8) is back in Menlo on Thursday to take on South Bend at 2:30 p.m. Willapa Valley (7-1) plays Naselle, also in Menlo, at 5:30 p.m.
