Wednesday’s College Basketball: Centralia Tops Highline to Push Win Streak to Seven

Centralia’s Piper Cai scored 18 points to lead the Blazers to a 59-49 win over Highline in a NWAC West Region women’s basketball game at Michael Smith Gymnasium in Centralia on Wednesday.

The Blazers are on a seven game win streak, which started with their West Region opener against Grays Harbor on Jan. 9 and has helped vault the Blazers to the top of the region.

Rachel Wilkerson added 10 points and five rebounds and Lindsey Nurmi tallied eight points.

Kanani Kremers led Highline with 16 points and Jazmina Lafitaga contributed 10 points.

Centralia shot 43 percent from the field while holding Highline to 29 percent shooting. The Hawks won the rebounding battle, 41-33.

The Blazers started strong and jumped out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter and expanded the lead in the second quarter to 36-19 at intermission.

Centralia scored just six points in the final frame, but had built a big enough lead to cruise to the win.

Centralia (13-8, 7-0) travels to Aberdeen to take on Grays Harbor next Wednesday in a West Region game.

Men’s Basketball

Highline Prevails Over Centralia

Highline shot 43 percent from the field and overcame a first half deficit to earn a 74-66 win over Centralia in a NWAC West Region men’s basketball game at Michael Smith Gymnasium in Centralia on Wednesday.

Marqus Gilson led the Blazers with 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Peyton Stanley tallied 12 points and Dionte’ Dixon totaled 11 points seven rebounds and three steals.

David Harris led all scorers with 34 points and seven rebounds for Highline and Ryder Kavanagh recorded 11 points. Napavine alum Jordan Purvis played five minutes and didn’t score.

Centralia shot just 33 percent from the field but had the edge on the boards, 43-32.

The Blazers led 33-31 at halftime. There were 11 lead changes in the second half, with Highline taking a lead with just more than four minutes remaining and never gave it up to earn the win.

Centralia (14-8, 4-3) travels to Aberdeen on Wednesday to take on Grays Harbor in a West Region contest.
