Wednesday’s College Basketball: Gilson’s Double-Double Leads Blazers Past Chokers

ABERDEEN — Centralia’s Marqus Gilson scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Blazers to a 72-59 win over Grays Harbor in a NWAC West Region men’s college basketball game here on Wednesday.

Jaxon Clarke added 10 points for the Blazers. LaBrandon Price chipped in nine points and seven rebounds and Collin Prangley tallied eight points and seven rebounds.

Zyare Ruffin led Grays Harbor with 17 points and Dallin Spencer contributed 10 points.

Centralia shot 40 percent from the field while Grays Harbor shot 32 percent from the field, including four of 29 from behind the arc.

It was a low scoring first half with the Blazers leading 29-25 at intermission.

Centralia built a double-digit lead early in the second half only to see Grays Harbor come back and cut the lead to 58-51 with just more than seven minutes remaining, but that is as close as the Chokers came as the Blazers were able to build the lead back up and cruise to the win.

Centralia (15-8, 5-3) hosts Lower Columbia on Saturday at 7 p.m. in a West Region game.

Women’s Basketball

Chokers Hand Blazers First Regional Loss

ABERDEEN — Grays Harbor’s Sandin Kidder recorded a double-double to help the Chokers earn a 65-48 win over Centralia in a NWAC West Region women’s college basketball game here on Wednesday.

Devanie Kleemeyer scored 11 points to lead Centralia. Piper Cai chipped in eight point and Caitlin Yenne tallied seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Kidder had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Charleea Armstrong contributed 14 points and Armonnie Byrd added 10 points.

Centralia didn’t have a good night shooting, converting just 26 percent of their field goals, including four of 31 from behind the arc. The Blazers were also outrebounded by Grays Harbor 56-35.

Grays Harbor led 10-6 after the first quarter and expanded the lead to 29-15 at halftime. The Blazers didn’t have a comeback in them as the Chokers outscored Centralia 36-33 in the second half.

Centralia (13-9, 7-1) will try to bounce back on Saturday at 5 p.m., hosting Lower Columbia in a West Region contest.
