Wednesday’s Girls Basketball: Big Third Quarter Helps Toledo Past Mossyrock
By The Chronicle
TOLEDO — Toledo outscored Mossyrock 19-4 in the third quarter to springboard their way to a 54-37 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Wednesday.
Kal Schaplow scored 18 points to lead all scorers and added eight rebounds and five assists. Stacie Spahr added 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Kyleigh Holmes recorded five assists and Haleigh Holmes chipped in four steals for the Indians.
Heather Edgar led Mossyrock with 14 points and Madison Vigre added 11 points.
It was a close first quarter with the Indians leading by one. Toledo created some separation in the second quarter and led 28-20 at halftime.
The third quarter put Toledo ahead for good, outscoring the Vikings by 15. Mossyrock won the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough for a comeback.
“We really stepped it up in the third. We came out and our energy was a lot higher. We were able to get some steals and play a little faster,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “I think we weren’t playing as good of defense as we could have until that third quarter. Kyleigh Holmes and Madill really changed the tempo of the game.”
Toledo (3-3) travels to Napavine on Friday while Mossyrock (2-2) is on the road against Adna on Friday in a non-league game.
Winlock Struggles Shooting in Loss to Toutle Lake
TOUTLE — The Cardinals shot poorly from the free throw line and the field in a 39-36 loss to Toutle Lake in a non-league girls basketball game here on Wednesday.
Winlock shot 19 percent from the field and made just 19 of 40 free throw attempts, including just 1 of 6 from the charity stripe in the overtime period.
Addison Hall scored 19 points to lead all scorers including the bucket to force overtime. In overtime, the Ducks didn’t make a field goal but made all six free throw attempts. Hall had a shot to tie that didn’t fall and the Cardinals got the ball back with 1.6 seconds left but weren’t able to get a shot off.
Winlock led 8-7 after one quarter and 18-16 at halftime. The Cardinals created some distance in the third quarter and went into the fourth up 28-22. Toutle Lake had a collection of offensive rebounds in the fourth to fuel the comeback.
Winlock coach Tori Nelson was frustrated with her team’s performance from the charity stripe.
“We shot 40 free throws and only scored 36 points and didn’t turn the ball over as much as we normally do,” Nelson said. “19 of 40, that’s really poor.”
Winlock (2-4) travels to Rainier on Friday for a non-league game.
Beeson Leads Napavine Past Morton-White Pass
MORTON — Napavine’s Riley Beeson recorded a double-double to lead the Tigers to a 38-28 win over Morton-White Pass in a non-league girls basketball game here on Wednesday.
Beeson scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Vannie Fagerness chipped in nine points and Sydney Purvis recorded six points and eight rebounds.
MWP was paced by Jacie Dunlap’s 12 points and eight rebounds. Hannah Smathers recorded nine points and Kaylen Collette had seven rebounds.
The difference in the game was shooting, as the T-Wolves shot just 18 percent from the field and 33 percent from the free throw line.
“We couldn’t shoot the ball, just struggled from the field shooting the ball. It’s not like we’re not getting the looks. The attempts are there,” MWP coach Tom Griffith said. “Our goal is over 60, so 53 is not bad. Our field goal percentage, we’ve got to get it up, got to improve.”
The game was at tied at seven after one quarter, but the dry spell started for MWP in the second quarter, with the Tigers scoring 16 points to jump out to a 23-13 lead at intermission.
Napavine kept it going in the third quarter and led 34-19 going to the fourth quarter. MWP made a comeback and cut the lead to five points with about two minutes left, but couldn’t get a shot to fall late as the Tigers hung on for the win.
MWP (1-5) hosts Wahkiakum on Friday in Randle while Napavine (1-5) hosts Toledo on Friday in a non-league contest.
