Wednesday’s Girls Basketball: Elma Uses Big First Half to Get Past Tenino

By The Chronicle

ELMA — The Eagles held Tenino to 12 points in the first half to help Elma earn a 48-32 win in a 1A Evergreen League girls basketball game here on Wednesday.

Kaylee Schow led the Beavers with 11 points and Ashley Schow added 10 points.

Quin Mikel led all scorers with 17 points and Kali Rambo added 12 points for the Eagles.

Elma shot 57 percent from the field while their defensive pressure was able to cause problems for Tenino as the Beavers shot 31 percent from the field.

Elma led 15-7 after one quarter and kept the momentum going in the second quarter for a 32-12 lead at halftime. Tenino won the second half 20-16, but couldn’t climb out of the hole from the first half.

“I think we played timid in that first half,” Tenino coach Brandi Thomas said. “We started to climb back though in the third quarter and find our groove, but we came out timid and hesitant. I think it was the pressure. It was something we were aware of going in but I’m glad we get to see them a second time.”

Tenino (11-4, 2-1) hosts Hoquiam on Friday 7 p.m. in a league boys-girls doubleheader.
