LONGVIEW — Toledo had their chances against Ilwaco here on Wednesday, but it was the Fishermen who were able to earn a 60-54 win in a District 4 2B girls basketball tournament quarterfinal game.
Ilwaco has punched their ticket to the regional round of state with the win and will face Willapa Valley in the district semifinals on Friday. Toledo will take on Adna on Friday in a loser out game at a to be determined time and location.
Kal Schaplow led the Indians with 20 points. Kyleigh Holmes contributed 11 points and Stacie Spahr tallied eight points and 13 rebounds.
Erika Glenn led all scorers with 23 points. Arianna Bell had 11 points and Ebby McMullen added nine points.
Ilwaco made 23 field goals while Toledo made 21 field goals and the Fishermen won the rebounding battle, 34-26.
Toledo led 12-8 after one quarter, but the Indians managed just five points in the second quarter to trail 26-17 at halftime. The Indians closed the gap in the third quarter and trailed 36-35 going into the final quarter. Ilwaco was able to fend off Toledo down the stretch and hit enough free throws to preserve the win.
“We always play hard and I like our effort. We had a poor second quarter where that separated us,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “We made a run, we just didn’t quite finish it.”
Adna won both meetings between the two teams during the regular season, including a 55-44 win in Toledo in the most recent meeting on Jan. 17.
