OLYMPIA — W.F. West’s Elizabeth Twining was the only local golfer to qualify for the state tournament at the District 4 2A girls golf tournament at Capitol City Golf Course here on Wednesday.

Twining shot a 103 on the second day after carding a 106 on the first day for a total of 209, finishing 18th to earn a spot in the state tournament.

She was able to qualify for state even after having a tough start to her round.

“I was very pleased with them. You’ve got to look at the six who went, played 18 holes, surviving 18 holes for some of those girls is truly a pretty good accomplishment,” W.F. West coach Bruce Thompson said. “For her (Twining) to get all that put back together took a tremendous amount of gumption. She pulled it together after the first hole, little by little, just followed the plan. You could see her getting tired towards the end.”

Teammate Laney Barker made the cut after shooting a 113 in the first round. She shot a 112 in the second round for a total of 225, placing 29th overall.

Centralia had two golfers make the second day in Lexi Erb and Tessa Smith. Erb carded a 109 in the first round and shot a 104 in the second round for a total of 213, finishing 23rd and just outside the cut to qualify for the state tournament. Tessa Smith shot a 113 in the first round and had a 125 in the second round for a total of 238, earning 35th overall.

Columbia River won the team title with 118 points. Mark Morris placed second with 115.5 points and Black Hills earned third with 105 points.

Tumwater’s Lily McCauley carded a two day total of 151 to win the tournament. Black Hills’ McKenna Canty took second with a 157 total and R.A. Long’s Josie Nickerson placed third with a two day total of 174.

In the first round, Centralia’s Lily Miller shot a 129, Mazzi Nowicki carded a 123 and Jordan Blaettler had a 141. W.F. West’s Makenna Klovdahl and Aeryn Elder each shot a 129, Emma Finley carded a 156 and Kat Torres shot a 130. Rochester’s Alex Anderson shot a 116 and Kylie Miller recorded a 117.

Twining will compete next Tuesday and Wednesday at the State 2A girls golf tournament at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake.
