Wednesday’s Girls Tennis: Bearcats Sweep Tigers in Regular Season Finale
By The Chronicle
W.F. West earned a clean sweep of all six matches to win an Evergreen 2A Conference girls tennis match against Centralia at Borst Park on Wednesday.
Joelle Chung won in the top singles match against Centralia’s Carissa Kaut, 6-4, 6-3. W.F. West coach Jack State noted that the WIAA will not allow Joelle to play in the sub-district tournament.
“Her religion doesn’t allow her to play on Saturday. Sub-districts don’t include a Saturday but they won’t allow her to start the tournament,” State said. “It’s disappointing, she’s worked hard for four years to put herself in a position to try to do the best she can and she’s not being allowed to do that.”
W.F. West’s Claire Kuykendall earned the win over Brynna Rooklidge in the No. 2 match, 6-4. 6-3. Kaylynne Dowling took the victory against Centralia’s Shannon Johnson in the No. 3 match, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
In doubles, Sydney Cameron and Jisu Han won in the top doubles match against Maddie Corwin and Liza Hopkins, 6-3, 6-0. Tiana Jeffries and Stephanie Drummond earned the win for the Bearcats in the No. 2 spot against Danika Jensen and Gracie Wiley, 6-2, 6-3. W.F. West’s Lexis Haller and Mak Moore needed three sets to defeat Maya O’Dell and Evie Rooklidge, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
“Lexis and Mak had a bad first set. I talked to them and they felt like they had lost the set because they made a lot of mistakes,” State said. “They were pretty spot on as far as figuring out what the other team was doing to beat them and make the adjustments to beat them.”
Centralia coach Deb Keahey thought the match was a good warmup for sub-districts.
“Our number three doubles split sets and the freshmen duo, Maya and Evie fought hard. It was a great learning experience for them,” Keahey said. “Playing an aggressive net game won the battle today. I was pleased with Maya and Evie’s grit throughout the match. Number three singles Shannon Johnson had a tight match with some exciting rallies. Shannon kept battling until the very last point, love seeing that in our team.”
Centralia and W.F. West will compete in the first day of the sub-district tournament on Friday at 8:30 a.m. at Steamboat Island Tennis Club in Olympia. The tournament will wrap up on Tuesday.
