Wednesday’s Girls Tennis: Centralia Cruises Past Aberdeen

By The Chronicle

The Tigers only dropped one set in six matches as Centralia cruised to a 6-0 win in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls tennis match at Borst Park in Centralia on Wednesday.

Carissa Kaut dropped just one game in her top singles match against Kylie Knodel, 6-1, 6-0. Centralia’s Evie Rooklidge made quick work of Chase Baller in the No. 2 singles match, 6-2, 6-2. Shannon Johnson didn’t drop a game for the Tigers in the No. 3 spot.

In doubles, Centralia’s Brynna Rooklidge and Danika Jensen needed three sets against Abbie Bradt and Molly Scroggs, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the top doubles match. Maddie Corwin and Liza Hopkins prevailed over Aberdeen’s Mary Long and Alicia Raygoza in the No. 2 match, 6-1, 6-2. Centralia’s Gracie Wiley and Maya O’Dell dropped just one game against Kylie Weihurg and Kylie Ehly, 6-1, 6-0.

“Our girls did really well today. Carissa keeps getting stronger at the baseline and at the net,” Centralia coach Deb Keahey said. “Freshman Evie Rooklidge has so much energy when she plays. Shannon Johnson just dominated today. Two and three doubles teams played very strategically and won their matches.”

Centralia (4-6, 2-3) travels to Tumwater tomorrow to take on Black Hills in an EvCo match.

Bearcats Fend Off Wolves

TUMWATER — W.F. West swept the singles matches and earned one win in doubles action to earn a 4-2 win over Black Hills in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls tennis match here on Wednesday.

Sydney Cameron dropped just one game against Black Hills’ Makenna Beeson in the top singles match, 6-0, 6-1. Joelle Chung earned the win in the No. 2 spot for the Bearcats, 6-2, 6-1 and Jisu Han didn’t drop a game to Black Hills’ Jolie Nguyen, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, W.F. West’s Tiana Jeffries and Stephanie Drummond fell to Selina Ryser and Abby Calvert, 6-0, 6-1. Black Hills’ Ainslee Campbell and Emily Schade took down Mak Moore and Lexis Haller in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. W.F. West’s Lauren Mason and Lauren Balmelli had to come from behind in the third set to defeat Lexi Becker and Ainslee Dragon, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

“Singles played pretty well. Black Hills is much stronger in their doubles, they have a couple teams that have been around awhile,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “I told the girls, we would have won by tiebreaker. I knew that we couldn’t lose but I really didn’t want to have to go to a tiebreaker to win. Lauren (Mason) and Lauren (Balmelli) came through for us.”

W.F. West (8-2, 3-1) hosts Tumwater on Friday in an EvCo match.
