Wednesday’s Local Baseball: Wranglers Misfire in Season Opener Against Mavericks

By The Chronicle

WESTPORT — The Wranglers pitching faltered here on Wednesday in a 11-7 loss to Ocosta in a season opening South Sound Senior Babe Ruth League baseball action.

Rural Baseball Inc. took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jacob Douglass was hit by a pitch and later driven home on a fielder’s choice. The Wranglers added three runs to their lead in the second inning when Jack Booth singled, Jesse Towns, Kaden Harrington and Kyle Hamilton drew walks, and then Douglass singled to bring his friends home.

The Mavericks stormed back in a big way in the bottom of the second with five runs. The home team was far from satisfied at that point and added a pair of runs in the third, three more in the fourth and a final run in the sixth for good measure. Ocosta outhit the Wranglers 7-6 on the day.

Booth had a matching pair of hits and runs in the game to lead Rural Baseball. Towns added a pair of hits and a run while Mekhi Morlin chipped in a hit and a run scored.

“We actually didn’t swing the bats too bad. We played well other than our pitching,” said Wranglers coach Jason Watson. “Some of that was probably my fault. I’m still getting to know these guys.”

Watson noted that Lukis Tamburello stood out defensively after he volunteered to don the catchers gear in a pinch for the Wranglers.

The Wranglers (0-1) will play this weekend in the Brian Cox Memorial Tournament in Centralia and Chehalis. They will face Rochester on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Wheeler Field.
