Wednesday’s Prep Baseball: Vaughn Pitches W.F. West Past Tumwater
By The Chronicle
Tanner Vaughn pitched a complete game for the Bearcats en route to a 6-2 win over Tumwater in an Evergreen 2A Conference baseball game at Bearcat Stadium in Chehalis on Wednesday.
Vaughn allowed five hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out six batters.
At the plate, Daniel Fagerness was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and a RBI and Lane Douglass had a double and three RBI. Leandre Gaines hit a double and scored two runs and Josiah Johnson also hit a double for the Bearcats.
Tumwater jumped out to a 2-1 lead after two innings, but W.F. West plated four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Gaines scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Douglass hit a double to clear the loaded bases for a 5-2 lead. The Bearcats tacked on one more run in the fifth inning.
“After yesterday, we struggled to throw strikes. Tanner answered the call today and did exactly what we needed. He attacked the strike zone,” W.F. West coach Bryan Bullock said. “It was probably our best defensive game of the season. Offensively, Douglass, once again, two outs, full count, bases loaded clearing double.”
W.F. West (12-1, 8-0) is at Wheeler Field on Friday to take on Centralia in the first Swamp Cup baseball game of the season.

Adna scored six runs in the second and added four runs in the third inning to end the game in five innings.
It was more of the same in Game 2 as the Pirates won 16-0 in five innings. Burdick hit a RBI single, Matthew Scheuber was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI and Abel Ingle had three RBI and a double.
Adna (12-3, 9-2) travels to Onalaska on Monday for a doubleheader while MWP (0-12, 0-9) hosts Rainier in Randle on Monday in a C2BL doubleheader.
Rochester Holds on For Win Over Wolves
TUMWATER — A day after the Warriors left the tying run stranded at third base in a one-run loss against Black Hills they managed to inflict the same fate on their foes. On Wednesday Rochester baseball held on for a 7-6 victory over the Wolves in Evergreen 2A Conference play.
Bodey Smith went the distance for the Warriors on the mound to earn the win. He tallied eight strikeouts on 101 pitches while allowing six hits and three walks.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Wolves managed to plate a runner and then put runners on second and third with two outs. With the winning run at second base, Smith found a way to keep the Wolves at bay by striking out the final batter on a called third strike.
“You can’t find a tougher competitor than Bodey. He’s had a back that’s been bothering him and I tried to ask him about it half way through the game and he wouldn’t even listen to it. He just said, ‘I’m fine,’” said Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom. “He’s as competitive as they come and as bulldog as they get.”
Before the Warriors could hang on for the league win, though, they had to claim the lead. That all-important goal wasn’t attained for good until the top half of that eventful seventh frame when Rochester scored three runs.
Jared Winters led off the top of the seventh inning for Rochester with a triple that turned into a Little League home run on an errant throw. After putting two more runners on the bases Nolan Eyles drove a single past a drawn in infield to score two more runs.
Earlier in the game Smith drove in three runs to help his own cause with a bases loaded double.
Winters finished the game with two hits and two runs scored while Landon Hawes added two hits and a run for Rochester.
Rochester (5-4, 4-4 league) will play at Aberdeen on Friday.
Mossyrock Takes Two From Toledo
MOSSYROCK — Mossyrock sent Toledo packing with two losses as the Vikings earned a sweep of a Central 2B League baseball doubleheader here on Wednesday.
The Vikings won Game 1, 4-1. Nick Fried pitched a complete game for Mossyrock, allowing three hits to go with three strikeouts.
JC Workman had a hit and a RBI for the Vikings. Toledo’s Hunter Eaton had a double and a RBI.
Mossyrock scored three runs in the second inning and added one more run in the third. Toledo plated their lone run in the sixth.
There were more runs in Game 2 but the result was the same, with the Vikings earning an 8-6 victory.
Mossyrock’s Keegan Kolb had a hit and Brennan Shriver was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. Workman was 2-for-3 with two runs and Matteo Mendoza added a hit.
Aiden Weist had a hit and a run and Fried was 2-for-2 with a run for the Vikings.
Toledo’s Bryce Marcil and Jesse Towns had two hits and two runs each. Ryan Bloomstrom added two hits and Brannan Guyor had a hit.
Toledo led 6-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Vikings scored six runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and earn the win.
Mossyrock (4-7, 3-6) hosts Toutle Lake for a doubleheader on Monday while Toledo (3-10, 1-7) hosts Kalama in a C2BL doubleheader on Monday.
