Wednesday’s Prep Girls Soccer: Adna Blanks Toledo
By The Chronicle
TOLEDO — Adna scored all three of their goals in the second half and the Pirate defense was stout in a 3-0 win over Toledo in a Central 2B League girls soccer match here on Wednesday.
Adna had 16 shots in the first half, but couldn’t find twine.
In the second half, it took just five minutes for the Pirates to get on the board. Payton Aselton curved a corner kick into the net and just out of the reach of Toledo goalkeeper Kaylee Veigel for a 1-0 lead.
Aselton assisted on the next goal by Cierra Swenson in the 48th minute. In the 52nd minute, Adna’s Alyssa Dougherty was fouled in the box and Aselton stepped up and buried the penalty kick for the final goal of the match.
Adna had 27 shots against Toledo.
“I think they played better in the second half. I thought we played well in the first half, Toledo’s defense did a good job of swinging the whole team to one side,” Adna coach Juli Aselton said. “They did a very good job with that. We sat down at halftime and said we’re still playing well but we have to move faster. That’s what we did in the second half, took quicker shots instead of trying to get through everybody.”
Aselton said Toledo has improved a lot since the first time Adna faced Toledo.
Adna (12-0) hosts Kalama on Monday in a C2BL match.
Cards Fly By Life Christian
WINLOCK – Alexa Barragan turned in a hat trick performance for the Cardinals here Wednesday as Winlock blasted Life Christian 9-5 in Central 2B girls soccer play.
Makayla Allbritton added two goals for Winlock and helped her team take a 4-2 lead into the intermission.
“Makayala actually opened up the scoring tonight and everything just started going from there,” said Winlock coach Brian Ziese.
In the second half Ziese subbed out senior stalwart goaltender Cheleena Squibb in favor of freshman glove wearer, Kiya Peppers. While he only had two subs for the game, Ziese also got creative with the lineup he put on the field in the second half.
“We were moving people around and doing some stuff and letting people play but it was good to see some other people step up and score too instead of where we’ve been entirely dominant on Alexa in the past.”
Gabby Cruz added two goals for Winlock in the game while Brenda Cuadra and Angela Gil-Munoz chipped in a goal each for the Cards.
“We just came out and actually put the ball in the net,” added Ziese. “Where the other night we struggled against Napavine, tonight we ended up just exploding.”
Elysse Loyola scored four goals for Life Christian.
Winlock (3-10) will play at Ocosta on Monday.
Note: Onalaska defeated Toutle Lake 6-0 in a C2BL girls soccer game in Toutle on Wednesday.
