Wednesday’s Prep Softball: Centralia Walks Off in Eighth Inning Against Rochester

By The Chronicle

The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and tallied a run in the eighth inning to walk off with a 2-1 win over Rochester in an Evergreen 2A Conference softball game at Borst Park in Centralia on Wednesday.

Centralia’s McKenzie Ulrich started in the circle and threw 7 ⅓ innings, allowing eight hits, one run and two walks with seven strikeouts. Delaney Glazer had an equally good performance for the Warriors, allowing six hits, one earned run and one walk with eight strikeouts in 7 ⅓ innings of work.

“Glazer is probably one of the best pitchers in our league. We knew that coming in,” Centralia coach David Orr said. “We just had to battle. They played great defense, they pitched around us and they kept us guessing.”

Courtney Spriggs was 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI and Ella Orr had a hit and a RBI. Sophie Duffy, Aspen Lilly and Ulrich each had hits for the Tigers.

Rochester’s Callie Crawford was 3-for-4, Faith Kennedy had a hit and a run and Glazer had a hit and a RBI. Maddie Bates, Kiyah Kennedy and Makaylah Ely each recorded a hit.

The Warriors scored first in the third inning as Glazer brought home Faith Kennedy for a 1-0 lead. That lead lasted all the way until the bottom of the seventh, as Spriggs hit a solo shot to even the score.

In the bottom of the eighth, Ulrich hit a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Orr stepped to the plate two batters later and hit a single to bring home the game winning run.

“Spriggs came up huge for us. Ella’s a freshman but she’s pretty clutch,” Orr said. “She loves those big moments, it was huge. It was probably one of the best games I’ve been a part of in a long time.”

Orr also commended the defensive play of Kylie Sharp in the infield.

Centralia (8-8, 5-7) hosts Aberdeen on Friday while Rochester (7-9, 4-8) hosts Black Hills on Friday in an EvCo game.
