Weekend Women’s College Basketball: Blazers Fall to Vikings in Elite 8

EVERETT — Centralia battled with Big Bend for four quarters but the Vikings scored 32 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 79-52 win in a NWAC women’s basketball tournament Elite 8 game here on Sunday.

Lindsey Nurmi led the Blazers with 10 points and four steals. Piper Cai added nine points and Allani Talapu chipped in seven points. Devanie Kleemeyer led Centralia with eight rebounds.

Miranda Johnson was the leading scorer with 25 points and Leah Dougherty added 15 points. Hannah Wilson scored 14 points and Kelsey Sorenson tallied 12 boards for the Vikings.

Big Bend shot 45 percent from the field while Centralia shot 30 percent, including three of 20 from behind the arc. The Vikings also won the rebounding battle 50-32, although Big Bend had 27 turnovers compared to Centralia’s 19.

It was 16-12 Vikings after one quarter and Big Bend built a 34-25 lead at intermission. Each team scored 13 points in the third quarter, but Big Bend shot 81 percent from the field, including 6 of 7 from downtown to run away with the win.

Centralia ends the season with a 15-15 overall record. It was the final game in a Centralia uniform for Isabella Elwood, Jamie Connally and Kleemeyer.

Blazers Cruise Past Rangers

EVERETT — Centralia held Olympic to 12 made field goals to earn a 58-39 win in a NWAC women’s basketball tournament Sweet 16 game here on Saturday.

Allani Talapu had 13 points to lead Centralia with Cailin Yenne adding 10 points. Megan Cash tallied nine points and Lindsey Nurmi grabbed nine rebounds.

Danielle Monson led the Rangers with 12 points and Natelee Gordon totaling nine points. Brittni Blake had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Centralia shot 38 percent from the field while Olympic shot 23 percent from the field including four of 19 from behind the arc. The Blazers won the rebounding battle 49-39.

The Blazers led 16-10 after one quarter. The team’s combined to score 15 points in the second quarter with Centralia leading 23-18 at halftime. Centralia outscored Olympic 18-9 in the third quarter to pull away and cruise to the win in the fourth quarter.
