Women’s College Basketball: Cardinals Fly Past Blazers

LONGVIEW — Centralia’s Piper Cai scored 19 points to lead all scorers but it wasn’t enough as North Idaho won 64-53 in a women’s college basketball game at the Lower Columbia Holiday Classic here on Thursday.

Lindsey Nurmi scored 11 points and Caitlin Yenne added five points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Blazers.

Heidi Sellman tallied 17 points and Keara Simpson recorded 11 points for North Idaho.

Each team attempted 60 field goals, with North Idaho making 24 shots while Centralia made just 19 shots. The Cardinals performed much better at the free throw line, shooting 85 percent while Centralia converted just 50 percent of their 18 shots from the charity stripe.

North Idaho led 21-16 after one quarter and each team scored 11 points in the second quarter for a 32-27 Cardinal lead at halftime.

It was all Cardinals in the second half, outscoring Centralia 32-26 to preserve the win.

Centralia (5-7) has more than a week off before hosting Grays Harbor at 6 p.m. on Jan. 9 in a West Division contest.
